Notes - Arne Christensen, age 88, longtime resident of Scottville, went to be with Jesus on Sunday morning, March 11. He passed away at Oakview Medical Care Facility, in the presence of his family who loved him and will greatly miss him.
Arne was born on June 2, 1912, in Kvong, Denmark, to James and Marie (Sorensen) Christensen. He and his family moved to the United States in 1921 when he was 9 years old and first settled in Nebraska. In 1923 they moved to Michigan.
Arne graduated from Scottville High School in 1932. He married Eleanor Henkel in 1935. She preceded him in death in January 1980. He married Florence Christensen in 1981 and she survives.
Arne worked for the Scottville A&P Grocery Store, Dow Chemical during World War II, and later became Warehouse manager at Stokely?s Canning Factory. He also worked as office manager for Hansen?s Evergreen Dairy in Scottville, retiring in 1977.
Arne was an exceptional athlete in his youth, excelling in many sports. He loved to be involved in community athletics volunteering his time in coaching, umpiring and service. Arne also served on the Scottville City Council, was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ludington, a 70-year member of the Danish Brotherhood in America Lodge No. 51, and an honorary lifetime member of the Scottville Optimist Club.
He will be lovingly and respectfully remembered by his children, Darlene (Richard) Bettison of Ludington, and Jim Christensen of Fountain; and also by his stepchildren, Ralph (Arlene) Christensen, Nedra (Robert) Haupt, Audrey McDonald, Nels (Sandy) Christensen, Peter (Jackie) Christensen, Lance (Cathy) Christensen; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Arne was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray and Gunnar Christensen. His two sisters, Gerda Schaap and Bertha (Clarence) Madsen survive.
A memorial service will be held for Arne at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ludington with the Rev. B. Douglas Niemi and the Rev. John Christensen officiating. There will be no funeral home visitation.
Those desiring may make memorial contributions (in lieu of flowers) to Lutheran Social Services of Michigan, c/o Bethany Lutheran Church, or to the Scottville Optimist Club. The Stephens Funeral Chapel of Scottville is in charge of arrangements.
