Notes - brillionpl Reverend Bonde in Davenport, Iowa, and Shelby Co Iowa: My great great grandparents were Catherine Marie Mikkelsen and Nels Hansen Hoogensen - Katie being the sister of your ancestor Christen Mikkelsen. The oldest daughter of Katie and Nels was Marie Elizabeth Haagensen married to Claus Christiansen, also born at Als. Their youngest daughter was Anna Maria Christiansen, married to Peter Swanson. The Christiansens moved to Davenport following the War of 1864, Claus having fought in that war for two years. He went to Davenport in 1868 and in 1870 after the birth of their second child, Elizabeth followed along with her sisters, another Mikkelsen, and a number of their neighbors and possibly relatives. .
I've been working on our Danish family for several decades, and have researched all of my ancestors full time for the last 10 years. I've never been able to learn the parents of Nels and Katie, only knowing that they lived at Als at the time of the birth of their children. I'm at a disadvantage not knowing Danish and living in Wisconsin where no one else does either.
Reading your site today at the library, I am also struck with your ancestor by the name of Bonde. When my grandparents were married and my mother was born at Davenport, Reverend Bonde of the Danish Lutheran church of Davenport officiated and signed the documents. I then saw that he had moved on to western Iowa and all of the huge Danish settlement there. Sadly, I don't have any of the documents with me today to be more specific. It seems quite likely that he was related to the above Bonde.
I don't have ancestry at home, but would be pleased to share information with you. I wonder if you could tell me how to obtain the documentation for the parents of Katie and Christen. You may contact me at vgmpaint@aol.com.
