George W. Valentine, 81, of Center Road, Block Island, RI, passed away Saturday evening, July 2, at home. He was the beloved husband of Jean Ann (Holm) Valentine for 60 years. Born in Waterbury, CT, son of the late Earl and Laura (Knollmeyer) Valentine, he grew up in West Haven, attended West Haven High and St. George's School in Newport, RI, Yale University and New York Medical School.
He interned at Waterbury Hospital and was a resident in anesthesia at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford prior to serving in the Air Force in France from 1958-1960. He was a past president of the Connecticut Society of Anesthesiologists, a founder of the Waterbury Extended Care Facility, a former member of the Block Island Medical Board and Zoning Board. Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Patricia Valentine Twickler of Branford, CT and Sheryl L. Valentine of Mashpee, MA; three sons, James H. Valentine of Southbury, CT, George F.
Valentine of Jamestown, RI and Robert W. Valentine of Essex, VT and ten grandchildren. Another son, George W. Valentine, Jr., died shortly after birth.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a graveside service on Wednesday, August 10, 2011 at 1:00 pm at Island Cemetery, Block Island. Immediately following the service there will be a celebration of life at Smuggler's Cove. Visiting hours are respectfully omitted. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Block Island Health Services or Block Island Rescue Squad in his memory would be appreciated.
