Studio portrait of 3038 Private (Pte) Albert Herbert Arthur Burden, 59 Battalion. A glazier from Ensay, Victoria, prior to enlistment in the 22nd Battalion on 31 July 1915, he embarked from Melbourne aboard HMAT Commonwealth on 26 November 1915 for Egypt. He was transferred to the 57th Battalion in February 1916 and then to the 59th Battalion the following month. His battalion relocated to the Western Front, France, in late June 1916. Pte Burden was killed in action near Sailly, France, on 19 July 1916. He was aged 19 years. This is one of a series of photographs taken by the Darge Photographic Company which had the concession to take photographs at the Broadmeadows and Seymour army camps during the First World War. In the 1930s, the Australian War Memorial purchased the original glass negatives from Algernon Darge, along with the photographers' notebooks. The notebooks contain brief details, usually a surname or unit name, for each negative.
