    • ORD — Lumir G. Hayek, 80, of Ord passed away on Saturday, Dec. 16, 2017, at the Valley County Health System Hospital in Ord.
      Mr. Hayek’s wishes were to be cremated. The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 23, at Calamity Jane’s Steakhouse in Ord. Inurnment services and military honors will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, at Fort McPherson National Cemetery south of Maxwell. Memorials are suggested to the Ord Volunteer Fire Department. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
      Lumir George was born May 10, 1937, on the farm in the Springdale Township of Valley County to Henry and Marie (Valla) Hayek. He received his education at Springdale Country School and Ord High School.

      Lumir entered the United States Army in November of 1955. He served in active duty until November of 1958, achieving the rank of SP5, and remained in the Army Reserve until his honorable discharge in November of 1961.
      Following the military, Lumir returned to Ord, where he worked various jobs. He drove a milk truck for O’Haloran Dairy before beginning his long-term employment with Boilesen Elevator and continued to run the family farm after his father’s death. In 1985, Lumir went to work at Trotter Fertilizer and Propane, where he worked until his retirement in 2009.
      On March 1, 1985, Lumir was united in marriage to Emily (Nelsen) Rice at Curtis and became the stepfather to Stacy and Shannon.

      Lumir was a member of the Valley Rods Car Club and a lifetime member of the Ord VFW.
      Stock car racing and NASCAR were a big part of Lumir’s life. He and Emily attended many races at various tracks in Nebraska. In the 1950s and ’60s Lumir drove his own stock car at area tracks. The couple attended NASCAR races in Michigan, Virginia, and many other states for over 20 years. Lumir’s favorite track was Bristol in Tennessee.
      He is survived by his wife, Emily of Ord; two daughters and sons-in-law, Stacy and Joel Streff of Ord and Shannon and Brent Phillips of Little Elm, Texas; three granddaughters, Kelsey Streff and Mackenzie and Hailey Phillips; and his constant companion, Chloe.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mildred Slagle, Irene Stanek and Alyce Peters; and a brother, Lesley “Lad” Sindelar.
