- Skokapten Johannes Olsson was born into the Nilsson family in Jonstorp, Sweden. The year was 1830. He had a great love for sailing and spent most of his life on the high seas. His career as the skipper of a sailing ship ended west of France. He was caught in a violent storm,
irregular atmospheric and turbulent waves struck his great ship and she heeled over and sank in the Bay of Biscay. Some lives were lost, but he survived although it impaired his health and he died of complications in 1887, at the age of 57.
Maria Jonasson was born in Jonstorp, Sweden in 1845 and married Johannes on Feb. 8th, 1867.
She was 22 and Johannes was 37. They had seven children, three boys and four girls.. Because of the economic and social changes that occurred in the late 1800's, five of their children came to America. When she died at the age of 86 in 1931, Sweden was developing into the most prosperous nation in Northern Europe. Johannes and Maria are buried in their family gravesite on the Parish Churchyard in Jonstorp, Sweden.
