- Gordon Thompson Caldwell, 80, of Stage Road passed from our world on Saturday, (October 27, 2007) at his beloved farm. He was born in Bridgeport on January 6, 1927 to Richard and Caroline Sarah Caldwell. He was raised in West Avon. He joined the United States Marine Corp in 1944 and the newly established United States Air Force in 1948. He was a veteran of three wars, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He flew as a pilot of B29s in the Korean War and was a squadron commander of cargo aircraft in the Vietnam War. His tours of duty led him and his family to many locations throughout the world where he was active in those churches and communities. He retired from the Air Force in 1974 as a Lt. Colonel. He and his family lived in South Hadley, MA and moved to Cummington, MA in 1983 where he raised Highland Cattle. His great love was his wife and family. He, in turn, was well loved by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Karen; his children, Carol Caldwell Kelley of Shutesbury, MA, Gordon Thompson Caldwell, Jr. of Yarmouth, ME, James Michael Caldwell of West Gardiner, ME, Richard Douglas Caldwell of Rutland, VT; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. A memorial service will be held in the Cummington Congregational Church on Thursday, November 1, at 1 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Childs Funeral Home of Haydenville, MA is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cummington Ambulance Fund.
