- WEST GARDINER, ME - Elizabeth Karen Caldwell, 87, died on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at Harbor View Cottage in Newcastle, Maine, with family by her side. She was born in Hamden, CT, on September 25, 1927, to James and Anke Hanghoj. Betty graduated from Hamden High School and was accepted into the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corp. She graduated as a registered nurse from Hartford Hospital. She married Gordon T. Caldwell (1927-2007) from Avon, CT, in 1949. He had a career as an Air Force pilot. Betty worked as a nurse in public schools, on military bases and as a private duty nurse over several decades of her career. She and her husband raised four children in many places around the world including Germany, France, Kansas, Alabama and Guam, and then settled in South Hadley, MA. Betty was active supporting her children in Scouts, youth groups and the churches in their communities. In retirement Gordon and Betty moved to Cummington, MA, where they raised Highland cattle and welcomed all with gracious hospitality. In her last decade Betty moved to Maine and her family is grateful for the caring staff of her Maine residences, including St. Mark's Home for Women in Augusta, Elm Street Assisted Living in Topsham, and Harbor View Cottage in Newcastle, ME. Betty's great love was her husband and family. She, in turn, was well loved by her family and friends. Betty is predeceased by her husband, Gordon T. Caldwell. She is survived by daughter Carol and husband Alan of Shutesbury, MA; son Gordon Thompson Jr. and wife Michele of Yarmouth, ME; son James and wife Susan of West Gardiner, ME; and son Richard and wife Anita of Rutland, VT; as well as 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
