- Obituary of Catharine JanzenCatharine JanzenPassed away on March 4, 2002 at the age of 84. Born in Iowa, Catharine was a graduate of LaVerne College. She has been a resident of the Dixieland area of rural Madera County since 1939. A homemaker, she taught school for a short time at the Dixieland School, but along with her husband of 60 years, Paul Janzen, she was involved in the family farming operation and the raising of their family.Catharine was a tireless worker at her church, the United Methodist Church of Madera, where she was a Take Charge person at countless dinners of the church. She was a Sunday School teacher for 35 years and was a member of the UMW (United Methodist Women). She was involved with the PTA and was a 4-H Leader at both Alpha and Dixieland Schools. She also served on the Election Board for 30 years. Catherine spent 27 days on a ship delivering cows and goats to South Korea for the Heifer Project. She was an active volunteer for this organization for 55 years.In addition to her husband Paul, Catherine is survived by her children and their spouses: Carl Janzen and his wife Christine of Madera, Glen and Vicki Janzen of Fresno, Ruth and George Beckman of Madera and Edith and John Hokman of Arcada, CA. She is the sister of Miles Miller of Upland, CA, Everett Miller of San Diego, CA, and Melvin Miller of Cherry Valley, CA. She is the beloved grandmother of Philip Janzen and his wife Stephanie, Dennis Janzen, Sharla Seidel and her husband Mark, Rachel Beckman and Matthew Beckman. She is the great grandmother of Paige Janzen and Seth Janzen.A Memorial Service in the celebration of Catharines life will be Saturday, March 9, 2002 at 11:oo a.m. at the United Methodist Church of Madera, 500 Sunset Avenue.
