5162 | Siblings Johanne Marie, Christian Petersen, Niels Jensen, Hans Christian and Mette Line Nielsen Census /Folketælling 1845 They all live in the poorhouse in Husum-Ballum. They are called "fattiglemmer" in Danish which could be translated as pauper. Very poor circumstances. Interesting here is that their family name isn´t written as Nielsen but Jensen. How come? This because of the use of patronymic which means that a new born in Denmark would get a family name by using the fathers given name plus the ending -sen which means son. A daughter would be given the ending -datter which means daughter. So these 5 siblings were named after their father Jens+sen= Jensen. The girls should have got the family name Jensdatter if it should have been correct. But in the church books they all got the family name Nielsen... | ||
