    Arne Christensen, age 88, longtime resident of Scottville, went to be with Jesus on Sunday morning, March 11. He passed away at Oakview Medical Care Facility, in the presence of his family who loved him and will greatly miss him.

    Arne was born on June 2, 1912, in Kvong, Denmark, to James and Marie (Sorensen) Christensen. He and his family moved to the United States in 1921 when he was 9 years old and first settled in Nebraska. In 1923 they moved to Michigan.

    Arne graduated from Scottville High School in 1932. He married Eleanor Henkel in 1935. She preceded him in death in January 1980. He married Florence Christensen in 1981 and she survives.

    Arne worked for the Scottville A&P Grocery Store, Dow Chemical during World War II, and later became Warehouse manager at Stokely?s Canning Factory. He also worked as office manager for Hansen?s Evergreen Dairy in Scottville, retiring in 1977.

    Arne was an exceptional athlete in his youth, excelling in many sports. He loved to be involved in community athletics volunteering his time in coaching, umpiring and service. Arne also served on the Scottville City Council, was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ludington, a 70-year member of the Danish Brotherhood in America Lodge No. 51, and an honorary lifetime member of the Scottville Optimist Club.

    He will be lovingly and respectfully remembered by his children, Darlene (Richard) Bettison of Ludington, and Jim Christensen of Fountain; and also by his stepchildren, Ralph (Arlene) Christensen, Nedra (Robert) Haupt, Audrey McDonald, Nels (Sandy) Christensen, Peter (Jackie) Christensen, Lance (Cathy) Christensen; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    Arne was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray and Gunnar Christensen. His two sisters, Gerda Schaap and Bertha (Clarence) Madsen survive.

    A memorial service will be held for Arne at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ludington with the Rev. B. Douglas Niemi and the Rev. John Christensen officiating. There will be no funeral home visitation.

    Those desiring may make memorial contributions (in lieu of flowers) to Lutheran Social Services of Michigan, c/o Bethany Lutheran Church, or to the Scottville Optimist Club. The Stephens Funeral Chapel of Scottville is in charge of arrangements.

    Gerda Schaap, age 93, of Ludington, MI, passed away on September 6, 2007 at Tendercare of Ludington. She was born on March 29, 1914 in Denmark, daughter of Jens and Marie (Sorensen) Christensen. She attended Scottville High School and graduated in 1933. Gerda married Harry D. Schaap in November of 1933 and was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ludington. Gerda is survived by her son, Arnold Schaap of Grand Rapids; step-sons, Richard (Charlotte) Schaap of Havana, FL, Rodger E. Schaap of Ruby Creek, MI, Russell (Grace) Schaap of Blythe, CA and eight step-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Harry in January 1991, three brothers, Arne Christensen, Gunner Christensen, Raymond Christensen and her sister, Bertha Madisen. Funeral Services for Gerda will be held on Saturday, September 15th at Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center located at 3060 W. US 10, Ludington, MI at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor William Huether officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will take place at the Plainfield Township Cemetery in Grand Rapids, MI. Memorial contribution in memory of Gerda can be directed Hospice of Michigan. The family has entrusted Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center with arrangements.

    Bertha J. Madsen, 84, died on Thursday, April 21 at Oakview Medical Care Facility, after suffering a stroke.

    Born Berta Johanna Kristiansen in Denmark in 1920, she emigrated to the United States with her family. She was given the name Bertha Christensen by immigration and was raised in Scottville.

    She married Clarence Madsen 66 years ago and together they had two children, Harriet (Klotz), who died in 2002 and Raymond, who now lives in Connecticut.

    In addition to her loving husband and son, she is survived by her sister, Gerda Schaap; and son-in-law, Charles Klotz. She also leaves behind five wonderful grandchildren, Charles Klotz Jr., Thomas Klotz, Dawn McHale, Jennifer Klotz and Shelley Havern, and their loving families, including six great-grandchildren.

    Harriet M. Klotz, 63, of 602 N. Franklin, Ludington, died unexpectedly Dec. 24 at Memorial Medical Center.

    Harriet was born to Clarence and Bertha (Christensen) Madsen June 5, 1939 in Scottville. She attended school in Ludington, graduating with the class of 1957.

    She was married on Sept. 13, 1958 in Ludington to Charles W. Klotz and he survives.

    Harriet retired from Nordlund and Associates in 2001 after 25 years of service. She enjoyed landscaping, gardening, traveling and taking care of her pets. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

    She was a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church.

    In addition to her husband, survivors include two sons, Charles W. (and Kenda) Klotz of Jenison and Thomas (and Darlene) Klotz of Hudonsville; three daughters, Dawn M. McHale of New York City, Jennifer H. Klotz of Grand Rapids and Shelly M. (and Douglas) Havera of Kalamazoo; and five grandchildren, Charles (Chad) Klotz, Katelyn A. Klotz, Emily M. Klotz, Allison M. Havera and Melanie A. Havera. Also surviving is a brother, Raymond C. Madsen of Riverton, Conn.; one aunt, Gerda Schaap of Ludington, and many cousins.

    Funeral services for Harriet M. Klotz will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 28 at the Bethany Lutheran Church with the Rev. B. Douglas Niemi officiating. The family will receive friends at the Dorrell Funeral Home this evening from 6-8 and on Saturday at the church for one hour prior to the service.

    Memorials may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church.

    The Klotz family is being served by the Dorrell Funeral Home.
