    Notes:

    My Mom (Pickle) remembers her Grandpa Rossen as being the nicest man who ever lived. He was a big guy who gave the best bear hugs and everybody in the Curtis area just loved him. He was a farmer when he first moved to the area and was the janitor at the school when he moved to town. She remembers when he got sick towards the end of his life, everyone in town went to visit him. Before he passed away, all of his children were at his bedside and he called them in for one last bear hug claiming there was room for everyone. When he had them all in his arms he told his wife Anna that he was going home. My Mom was 15 or 16 when he died and she remembers it as if it was yesterday. She also said he had the thickest, whitest hair. All of us Thomsens with thick hair can thank our Great Grandpa Jorgen.

    My mom Hilda Thomsen Edwards, Leachman was born in 1926. I asked her about Grandpa Rossen and she said when she was in HIgh School, she stayed with Grandpa Rossen in town because they lived in the country. She did this when she was a senior and she graduated in 1944. Mostly she remembers when Grandpa Rossen and his friends could not find enough people to play pinnochle, then they would have her play

    I have so many wonderful memories of celebrating our birthdays together! Notoriously Uncle Marion would send a new Kitten home with me against my dad Robert Leroy Nelsen's wishes!!! Also I think I was 4-5 years old we were all together and Aunt Wanda made homemade spaghetti & meatballs I had this heaping amount of spaghetti thinking I'm not going to be able to eat it all loved the two of them, lots!!

    As kids, when grandpa was in the hospital in Omaha, dad left us three boys with Marion and Wanda. I remember playing with trucks on the back porch area. At any rate, sometime during the evening, my brother Jeremy went missing. Wanda frantically searched for him but since he was just a baby he couldn't get far and Marion wasn't too worried. Jeremy had managed to crawl behind the couch and wedged in there. They eventually found him. I always looked up to Marion and still picture Wanda as a Barbra Stanwick type from Big Valley.

    Marion W. Nelsen was born May 11,1917 to Peter C .and Anna Elsie (Rossen) Nelsen on a farm north of Curtis, NE. As a small child they moved to a farm south of Curtis where he attended country school and then graduated from NSA in Curtis in 1937.

    In 1941 he enlisted in the Air Force and was sent overseas in February of 1942. He was stationed in the South Pacific on Christmas Island, New Heberdies and Guadalcanal. He returned to the states June of 1944 and was stationed at Victorville Air Base, CA. He was later honorably discharged at Ft. Leavenworth in 1945.

    He married Wanda Fratti October 20, 1945 in Detroit, Michigan. They returned to Curtis in 1947 and moved to a farm south of Curtis, living there 16 years. Their children Jim and Diane spent most of their young lives on this farm.

    The family moved north of Curtis in 1963 and lived there until 1990 when Marion and Wanda retired and moved to North Platte, NE after 43 years of farming.
    He was a life-time member of the American Legion and served on the school board of the Curtis Elementary School.

    His family remembers his love of his children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was responsible for many of them learning to drive an old stick shift car on their farm south of Curtis. He was also an avid sports fan traveling to three states to watch his grandsons and great nephew play football.

    Marion was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers and their spouses Leroy and Velma Nelsen, Kenneth and Dolly Nelsen, sisters and spouses Margaret and Marvin Schmid, Doris and Gerald Awtry, nephew Dennis Awtry and most recently his wife of 64 years, Wanda Nelsen.

    Survivors include his son Jim Nelsen and wife Marilyn of Marion, Iowa and daughter Diane Pollmann and husband Larry of McCook. Grandsons Clint (Mandi) Nelsen of Grimes, IA, Neil (Kelly) Nelsen of Indianola, IA, Darren (Courtney) Pollmann of McCook, NE and granddaughter Lisa Pollmann of McCook, NE. Great grandchildren Elle, Lane, Tyde, Aspen and Grady Nelsen and Olivia, Miles and Eileen Pollmann and a host of friends and relatives. 

    Marion married Wanda Fratti on 20 Oct 1945 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, USA. Wanda (daughter of Giuseppe Fratti and Elena Fulgari) was born on 7 Dec 1920 in Pavulo, Italy; died on 22 Feb 2010. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Robert Thomsen, 94, of Kearney, formerly of Gibbon died Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at the Mitchell County Hospital in Beloit, KS. Memorial services will be held at a later date.

    Memorials are suggested to the Central Nebraska Veterans Memorial and Gibbon Public Schools. Condolences may be shared online at www.osrfh.com. Services are entrusted to O’Brien Straatmann Redinger Funeral and Cremation Services.

    Robert was born January 7, 1925 in Curtis, NE to Knud and Rena (Rossen) Thomsen. He grew up on a farm near Curtis and received his education from the Nebraska School of Agriculture. Immediately following his graduation, Robert was drafted into the U.S. Army. He went to basic training in Texas and was sent to Camp Crowder in Missouri before his deployment to the European Theater. Robert was in Marseille, France waiting to deploy to the South Pacific when the Japanese surrendered. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army in December of 1945.

    On November of 1943, Robert was united in marriage to Veda Amstuz in Oberlin, KS. The couple moved to Curtis, NE where he owned and operated the Palace Café. They moved to Gibbon where Robert worked for Consumers Public Power and later owned and operated Thomsen Fuels in Gibbon.

    Robert enjoyed piloting small airplanes as a young man with his brothers-in-law. He loved thoroughbred horseracing and owned several that competed at numerous racetracks. He enjoyed many camping trips with his family across the United States. After his retirement, he traveled with his wife, Veda to Denmark where he met his father’s family and visited family homesteads. His father emigrated from Denmark and since both parents spoke only Danish in the home, Robert’s first language was Danish, learning English when he went to school. He was very proud of his heritage and loved telling Danish names of his favorite foods.

    He and his wife, Veda also traveled to Norway, Hawaii, Canada, Argentina, Chile, Cape Horn, and the Falkland Islands. However, his favorite adventure was an extensive camping trip to Alaska. Robert was a longtime member of the Gibbon American Legion, Masonic Lodge and the Gibbon Baptist Church. He also served for several years on the Gibbon City Council.

    He loved being with his family and telling many good and funny stories to friends and family. He and Veda celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in November of 2018. He was honored to have the opportunity to travel with the Buffalo County Hero Flight to Washington, D.C.

    Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Veda; sons, Robert Kevin Thomsen of Albuquerque, NM, Einer Thomsen and wife, Susan of Omaha, Bernard Thomsen and wife, Nancy of Shawnee, KS; daughters, Sandra Parker and husband, Steve of Las Vegas, NV, Linda Beery of Wichita, KS, Jean Sidwell and husband, Scott of Kearney, Christine Krakel and husband, John of Red Feather Lake, CO, Davine Meza and husband, Ygnacio of Elkhorn, NE and Decca Gard and husband, Rusty of Fort Worth, TX; 20 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; sisters, Hilda Leachman, Luella Glaze, Delila Cooper and Eloise Snyder; as well as, several nieces, nephews and extended family and friends.

    Robert was preceded in death by his parents; son, Oscar Knud Thomsen; grandson, Christian Thomsen; granddaughter, Brianne Meza and a brother, Harold Thomsen.

    Delila "Pye" Cooper, 88, of Curtis, NE, died November 26, 2020 at Senior Living Choices in Curtis, NE.

    She was born March 7, 1932 in Curtis, NE, daughter of Knud and Rena (Rossen) Thomsen. She grew up and attended school in Curtis. On January 23, 1954 she married Keith Regis Cooper in Curtis. They lived in Curtis until 1963 when they moved to Omaha. They lived there until Keith was transferred to Arizona. Following Keith's death in 1999 Delila moved back to Curtis.

    Delila was baptized as a Lutheran as a child, but attended the Berean Bible Church in Curtis. She enjoyed playing pitch, embroidering, and ceramic's. When she was younger she was on a women's bowling team, did Artex painting and food demos. She loved to visit and travel. When she was able, she enjoyed clipping coupons and finding rebates on items, and got pretty good at it.

    Survivors include son, Mark Cooper of Papillion; two daughters, Barbara (Larry "Dale") Grobe of Curtis, Susan (Roy) Roberts of Plattsmouth; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Cooper; nine grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren three sisters, Hilda Leachman of Alliance, Luella Glaze of Curtis, Eloise "Pickle" Snyder of Grant, Janet Hebblethwaite, Mary Patterson, Jerry (Kay) Cooper, Linda (Dean) Goad and Dennis (Cindy) Cooper as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

    Delila was Preceded in death by husband Keith, daughter, Marianne, son Michael S. Cooper, granddaughter Serena Christine Grobe, brothers Harold and Robert Thomsen, nephews Oscar Thomsen and Ron Glaze, In-laws, Ralph & Beulah Cooper, Jeanne Cooper, Bernie Hebblethwaite,Jake Leachman, Daryl Snyder and Gorman Glaze.

    Visitation will be held at Berean Bible Church, Curtis, Nebraska; Friday, December 4, 2020, 4:00 pm - 7:00 pm, with the family present from 4:00-6:00 pm.

    MAXWELL, Nebraska -- Chris L. Nelsen, age 53, of York, Nebraska, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, near Maxwell.

    He was born Aug. 17, 1959, at McCook, Nebraska, to Robert 'LeRoy' and Velma (Ramels) Nelsen and graduated in 1978 from Curtis-Medicine Valley High School. Chris was a longtime sales Manager at Scott-Hourigan Co. in York. Chris loved golfing, attending farm shows and traveling for work. He also enjoyed his toy tractor collection and his two best buddies "Jazzy and Lizzy."

    In December of 1979 Chris was married to Judy Jurgens at Curtis. Then on Nov. 28, 1998, he was married to Denise (Reese) Shirley at North Platte.

    He is survived by his wife, Denise, of York; his son, Daniel Lee Nelsen of Moorefield, Nebraska; twin daughters, Erica LaRae (Brett) Bartlett of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Joslyn Renee Nelsen of Curtis; son, Brian (Chelsea) Reese of Hickman, Nebraska; daughter Jenny (James) Snook of Lincoln, Nebraska and son, Tyler Reese, also of Lincoln. Also surviving is his brother, Don Nelsen ( Johnna Rutenber) of Krum, Texas and his sisters, Charlene (Gaylord) Johnson of Hastings, Nebraska, Emily (Lumir) Hayek of Ord, Nebraska, Janice Nelsen of Hastings and Lori (Tom) Tobiasson of North Platte.

    His grandchildren include MacKenzie Nelsen and Bentley Campbell, both of Curtis, Jacoby Snook of Lincoln, Batie Reese of Hickman and Brecken Bartlett of North Carolina and his in-laws Vernon "Sonny" (Eileen) Shirley of North Platte, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.

    Memorial services are scheduled for 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in York with Mary Scott officiating. Private family inurnment to be held at a later date. Family will greet friends Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm at the mortuary. Memorials may be directed to the family for later designation.     NORTH?PLATTE?-- Dennis G. Awtry, 61, of North Platte, died Monday (Jan. 14, 2008), at Great Plains Regional Medical Center.

    He was born to Gerald and Doris Nelsen Awtry on June 30, 1946, near Curtis in his grandparents sod house. He grew up in McCook and graduated from McCook High School in 1964.

    He entered the U.S. Army in 1965, and served in Japan for one year at an army hospital before serving in Vietnam. After his discharge he moved to North Platte in 1971, and worked at Nebraska Machinery.

    He married Donna Schmidt on June 18, 1977, at the Messiah Lutheran Church.

    He was part owner and operator of San-Dens Arts and Crafts with his sister. He was a commodities broker with his cousin, Jim. He returned to college, graduated from Kearney State College with a bachelor's degree and master's degree in art education. He taught at St. Pat's High School for the last 12 years.

    He belonged to the Messiah Lutheran Church.

    He was preceded in death by his parents.

    Survivors include his wife, Donna of North Platte; one son, Joe Awtry of Lincoln; sister, Sandy and husband, Dick Foran of North Platte; and brother, Wayne Awtry of McCook.

    Memorial services will be Friday, 10 a.m., at Messiah Lutheran Church in North Platte with the Rev. Lynn Parsons officiating.

    Cremation was chosen and register book signing is today until 9 p.m., with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m., at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home in North Platte.

    Margaret Ann “Margie” Strickland, 61 years of age, of Republican City, Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the Harlan County Health System in Alma. Margie was born August 19, 1956 at Omaha, Nebraska, the eldest of three children of Clayton and Donna (Schroeder) Rossen. She received her education in El Cerrito, California, graduating from El Cerrito High School with the class of 1974. Following her education in California, she returned to Nebraska, where she focused her efforts on her three children: Christy, Richard and Alex. Margie was employed by Becton-Dickinson in Holdrege for 19 years, and most recently she was employed at The Island in Republican City, where many of the patrons were like her second family.
    Margie loved the outdoors, and animals were always a big part of her life. She was an avid Husker fan, and the time she spent with her family and friends was treasured throughout the years.
    She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Richard.
    She leaves to celebrate her life; her two children: daughter, Christy Dean of Lincoln, Nebraska; and son, Alex Strickland of Grand Island, Nebraska; ten grandchildren: Mackenzie, Danielle, Dallas, Maddie, Dayson, Maddox, Taylor, Tyler, Colby, and Jayden; four great-grandchildren; two brothers: Larry Rossen and his wife, Janell of Gothenburg, Nebraska, and Matt Rossen of Hastings, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
    There will be no visitation, or memorial book signing, the family is honoring Margie’s wish for cremation.
    In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Margie’s honor and will be designated at a later date.

    Michael Scott Cooper, 63 of Pacific Junction, Iowa passed away April 19, 2019 in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born November 9, 1955 in McCook, Nebraska to Keith Regis and Delila Ruth (Thompsen) Cooper.
    Michael enlisted in the United States Marine Corp on August 15, 1974. He received a Purple Heart after being shot while serving in Cambodia. Michael was united in marriage to Rhonda Kaye Sego-Hastie on December 6, 1997 in Pacific Junction, Iowa. He was employed as a truck driver for Feed Energy. He loved his pets, reading, going to rodeos, listening to country music and watching old westerns.
    Preceding Michael in passing were his father, sister, Marianne and niece Serena. Survivors include his wife Rhonda Cooper of Glenwood, Iowa; mother, Delila Cooper of Curtis, Nebraska; siblings, Mark Cooper of Papillion, Nebraska; Barbara (Dale) Grobe of Curtis Nebraska; Susan (Roy) Roberts of Plattsmouth, Nebraska; several nieces, nephews, extended relatives and many friends.
