Edna Casey, 98, died on Wednesday, June 12, 2002 at McIntosh Manor Nursing Home in McIntosh, MN.
Funeral services will beat 10:30 A.M. on Monday, June 17, 2002 at the Presbyterian Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with Reverend Russell Harris officiating. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Terrebonne, MN.
Visitation will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday, June 16, 2002 at Johnson Funeral Service in Red Lake Falls with a 7:00 P.M. prayer service on Sunday evening and at the church for one hour prior to services on Monday.
Edna Katherine Rossen was born in Eugene, Oregon on April 14, 1904 the daughter of Nels and Eleanor (Andersen) Rossen. In about 1910 Edna's father traded his farm in Oregon for the one in Red Lake County. She attended the Prairie Queen Elementary School in Terrebonne Township and graduated high school in Red Lake Falls. After Edna earned a Normal School One-Year Certificate in Teacher Training, she taught in Broadus, Montana in the 1920's.
Edna married James Henry Casey on September 3, 1930 in Shakopee, Minnesota and they began farming on Edna's father's farm in Terrebonne Township. Edna and James purchased the farm in the late 1930's. Together they had three children, Shirley Ann, James Donald, and Joseph Lawrence.
About 1948 Edna resumed teaching at the Prairie Queen School in Terrebonne Township. She also taught at the Huot School, and at an elementary school north of Red Lake Falls. During those years James and Edna would live on their farm in Terrebonne Township from spring through fall. During the winter they would live in Red Lake Falls.
In the late 1950's Edna accepted an elementary teaching position in the McIntosh Schools and taught in McIntosh until she retired at age 65. During those years James and Edna would live on their farm in Terrebonne Township from spring through fall. During the winter they would live in McIntosh.
Edna continued with her college education after she went back to teaching and earned a Bachelor's Degree from Moorhead State College. She also earned a Certificate for the Teaching of Remedial Reading. Edna taught a total of 26 years in schools and taught adult students in reading individually after her retirement. After Edna retired from teaching she and James lived on their farm and later moved to Red Lake Falls.
Until Mrs. Casey moved to McIntosh Manor Nursing Home, she remained active with the Red Lake County Fair Board, as she has been for more than twenty years. She was a member of the Red Lake County Board of Aging, The French Club (Afran) of Red Lake Falls, the Royal Neighbors of America, as Legislative Chairperson for the Retired Educators of America, the Advisory Council of Red Lake County, the Mentor and Red Lake Falls American Legion Auxiliary, the Minnesota State Department of Aging, Elderhostel, the Northwest Senior Federation and was also a 4-H Club leader in Red Lake County for eighteen years, and a Sunday School Superintendent in Mentor for seventeen years.
Edna is survived by one son, Joseph (Delphine) Casey of Estes Park, Colorado; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 4 great great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James on October 31, 1973; daughter, Shirley Ann Foldoe; son, James Donald Casey; brother, Walter; and sister, Annie
