Celebration of Life Service for Margaret A. “Margie” Strickland will be held on Monday, February 12, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at the Peace Lutheran Church in Alma, Nebraska with Pastor Sarah Shanks and Mr. Gary Janssen officiating. A private family inurnment will be held at a later date.
Margaret Ann “Margie” Strickland, 61 years of age, of Republican City, Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, February 7, 2018 at the Harlan County Health System in Alma. Margie was born August 19, 1956 at Omaha, Nebraska, the eldest of three children of Clayton and Donna (Schroeder) Rossen. She received her education in El Cerrito, California, graduating from El Cerrito High School with the class of 1974. Following her education in California, she returned to Nebraska, where she focused her efforts on her three children: Christy, Richard and Alex. Margie was employed by Becton-Dickinson in Holdrege for 19 years, and most recently she was employed at The Island in Republican City, where many of the patrons were like her second family.
Margie loved the outdoors, and animals were always a big part of her life. She was an avid Husker fan, and the time she spent with her family and friends was treasured throughout the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Richard.
She leaves to celebrate her life; her two children: daughter, Christy Dean of Lincoln, Nebraska; and son, Alex Strickland of Grand Island, Nebraska; ten grandchildren: Mackenzie, Danielle, Dallas, Maddie, Dayson, Maddox, Taylor, Tyler, Colby, and Jayden; four great-grandchildren; two brothers: Larry Rossen and his wife, Janell of Gothenburg, Nebraska, and Matt Rossen of Hastings, Nebraska; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
There will be no visitation, or memorial book signing, the family is honoring Margie’s wish for cremation.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Margie’s honor and will be designated at a later date.

Notes:

My Mom (Pickle) remembers her Grandpa Rossen as being the nicest man who ever lived. He was a big guy who gave the best bear hugs and everybody in the Curtis area just loved him. He was a farmer when he first moved to the area and was the janitor at the school when he moved to town. She remembers when he got sick towards the end of his life, everyone in town went to visit him. Before he passed away, all of his children were at his bedside and he called them in for one last bear hug claiming there was room for everyone. When he had them all in his arms he told his wife Anna that he was going home. My Mom was 15 or 16 when he died and she remembers it as if it was yesterday. She also said he had the thickest, whitest hair. All of us Thomsens with thick hair can thank our Great Grandpa Jorgen.

My mom Hilda Thomsen Edwards, Leachman was born in 1926. I asked her about Grandpa Rossen and she said when she was in HIgh School, she stayed with Grandpa Rossen in town because they lived in the country. She did this when she was a senior and she graduated in 1944. Mostly she remembers when Grandpa Rossen and his friends could not find enough people to play pinnochle, then they would have her play
