Steve Nedzel, the Lincoln-Way West High School band director, died shortly after 1 p.m. Friday, friends close to the family said. He was 32.

Members of the West band were informed at 5 p.m. According to an employee at Lincoln-Way District 210, Nedzel suffered head trauma from a fall as he was going to his apartment in Chicago on Tuesday morning.

He is survived by his brother and his parents. A memorial service has not yet been set.

According to the Lincoln-Way West Music Boosters' website, Nedzel directed the Wind Symphony, Marching Warriors, Pep Band and Percussion Ensemble. He also taught Music Technology I and II classes.

Before coming to West in 2009, Nedzel was the assistant band director at Lincoln-Way Central for eight years. He directed the Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Pep Band, taught Music Technology, Piano, and Guitar classes and also assisted with and wrote drill for the Marching Knights.

According to the website, Nedzel grew up in Palatine and attended Fremd High School. He received a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois and completed his Masters of Music Education from VanderCook College of Music in 2005 and his Masters of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Northeastern Illinois University in 2009.

Steve Nedzel, 32, of Chicago, died Friday, June 17, 2011, surrounded by loving family and friends. Steve graduated from Fremd High School in Palatine, received a degree in Music Education from the University of Illinois and master's degrees in Music Education and Education Administration.

Steve was the Music Department Chairman and Marching Warriors Band Director at Lincoln-Way West High School, and played sax in the Northshore Concert Band.

He is survived by his father, Michael; mother, Karen; brother, Andy; grandmother Cecelia, Jayme, Gabby and countless friends and relatives.

A memorial for family and friends will be held at All Saints Lutheran Church, 630 S. Quentin Road in Palatine, Saturday, June 25 at 11 a.m. with visitation at 9:30 a.m. A separate service for students and parents in District 210 will be held at Lincoln-Way West High School, 21701 S. Gouger Road in New Lenox on Saturday, July 2 at 11 a.m.

Mary Louise (Kendrick Steinbock) Schoeberlein died in her sleep in her Catonsville home on Feb. 2, 2008. She was 90.

One of six children, Mrs. Schoeberlein was born in Mobile, Ala., on July 10, 1917, to Richards Kendrick and Evelyn Bartee.

During World War II, she worked at Union Memorial Hospital as a Red Cross nurse's aide. Later in her life, Mrs. Schoeberlein was an accountant. She lived in Catonsville for more than 50 years and was extremely active in the community. Mrs. Schoeberlein served on local, county and state PTA boards.

As a Cub Scout den mother, she once took 12 boys on a three-day trip to New York, which she considered the highlight of her Scouting career. Mrs. Schoeberlein led her den in numerous Fourth of July parades and chaired the father-son banquet three times. In addition to leading a Girl Scout troop, she volunteered as district chairwoman and organized the first cookie sale for the West District.

For many years, Mrs. Schoeberlein served as treasurer for the Catonsville Woman's Club, chaired many committees and assisted in the Swap Shop. She volunteered at Deaton Medical Center and at the Maryland Science Center. Mrs. Schoeberlein, a longtime member of Christ Lutheran Church, oversaw several mother-daughter banquets, once made 60 children's choir and 30 acolyte robes, helped on area and district Lutheran Church Women boards and was secretary to the state board.

Mrs. Schoeberlein also enjoyed traveling and made several trips abroad, sometimes accompanied by her grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Charles Steinbock Jr. and William Schoeberlein.

Surviving relatives include C. Richards Steinbock of Annapolis, her son; daughters Karen Nedzel with spouse Michael of Rolling Meadows, Ill., and Joanne Schoeberlein of Westminster; grandsons Andrew and Stephen Nedzel of Chicago and Benjamin Steinbock with Esther of Washington.

On Feb. 9, a memorial service was conducted in Our lady of the Angels Chapel at the Charlestown retirement community. A reception followed at the City Lights cafe. A family interment will take place in Loudon Park Cemetery.
