Gordon Thompson Caldwell, 80, of Stage Road passed from our world on Saturday, (October 27, 2007) at his beloved farm. He was born in Bridgeport on January 6, 1927 to Richard and Caroline Sarah Caldwell. He was raised in West Avon. He joined the United States Marine Corp in 1944 and the newly established United States Air Force in 1948. He was a veteran of three wars, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He flew as a pilot of B29s in the Korean War and was a squadron commander of cargo aircraft in the Vietnam War. His tours of duty led him and his family to many locations throughout the world where he was active in those churches and communities. He retired from the Air Force in 1974 as a Lt. Colonel. He and his family lived in South Hadley, MA and moved to Cummington, MA in 1983 where he raised Highland Cattle. His great love was his wife and family. He, in turn, was well loved by his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Karen; his children, Carol Caldwell Kelley of Shutesbury, MA, Gordon Thompson Caldwell, Jr. of Yarmouth, ME, James Michael Caldwell of West Gardiner, ME, Richard Douglas Caldwell of Rutland, VT; nine grandchildren and one great grandchild. A memorial service will be held in the Cummington Congregational Church on Thursday, November 1, at 1 p.m. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. Childs Funeral Home of Haydenville, MA is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cummington Ambulance Fund.

WEST GARDINER, ME - Elizabeth Karen Caldwell, 87, died on Wednesday, July 22, 2015, at Harbor View Cottage in Newcastle, Maine, with family by her side. She was born in Hamden, CT, on September 25, 1927, to James and Anke Hanghoj. Betty graduated from Hamden High School and was accepted into the U.S. Cadet Nursing Corp. She graduated as a registered nurse from Hartford Hospital. She married Gordon T. Caldwell (1927-2007) from Avon, CT, in 1949. He had a career as an Air Force pilot. Betty worked as a nurse in public schools, on military bases and as a private duty nurse over several decades of her career. She and her husband raised four children in many places around the world including Germany, France, Kansas, Alabama and Guam, and then settled in South Hadley, MA. Betty was active supporting her children in Scouts, youth groups and the churches in their communities. In retirement Gordon and Betty moved to Cummington, MA, where they raised Highland cattle and welcomed all with gracious hospitality. In her last decade Betty moved to Maine and her family is grateful for the caring staff of her Maine residences, including St. Mark's Home for Women in Augusta, Elm Street Assisted Living in Topsham, and Harbor View Cottage in Newcastle, ME. Betty's great love was her husband and family. She, in turn, was well loved by her family and friends. Betty is predeceased by her husband, Gordon T. Caldwell. She is survived by daughter Carol and husband Alan of Shutesbury, MA; son Gordon Thompson Jr. and wife Michele of Yarmouth, ME; son James and wife Susan of West Gardiner, ME; and son Richard and wife Anita of Rutland, VT; as well as 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. My grandfather, Theodore Holm, was the twentieth of twenty two children born in Ballum, Tonder, Denmark. He was born in 1868, came to America in 1890, married in Hamden, CT in 1893, and died in Hamden in 1903. He was married to Elizabeth Andersen who was born in Copenhagen on December 9, 1873. His father was Peder (Peter) Andersen Holm from Brons and his mother was Anke Marie Lindberg, also from Brons. The names of some of the other children: Lars Willadsen ; Anders Jessen ; Jeppe Poulsen; Marie; Maren Beyer; Hans Schach; Petra; Anke Marie; Peder Andersen; Jes Andersen; Mette Cathrine; Bothilde; Beyer; Caroline (Karoline); and Birthe. Not all came to the US but we know some did. All family members who could have helped put this together are gone. What we remember doesn't help much. Looking for any help I can get.
