On this date in 1957, Daryl and Clara Eloise "Pickle" Thomsen Snyder (my parents) and Kenny and Dolly Nelsen were married in Curtis, Nebraska. This is the only picture of my Mom and Dad from their wedding. As an interesting side note, the couples were going to honeymoon in Omaha but made a stop at the Soldiers and Sailors home in Grand Island to visit my Grandpa Knud Thomsen. Unbeknownst to them, he reserved two rooms for them and they felt like they should stay one night there. So they spent their wedding night in the most romantic spot in the world - the Soldiers and Sailors home!

  • Notes
    • Daryl Snyder, 83, of Grant, passed away Jan. 31, 2015, at his home.
He was born on July 20, 1931, in Ogallala to Faye and Lois Thayer Snyder. He grew up on a farm northwest of Grant until moving into town, where he graduated from Perkins County High School in 1949. During high school, he was the starting quarterback for three years on Ed Haenfler?s football team, which was chosen as the Class C state champion his senior year. Daryl joined the United States Coast Guard in 1951 and served until 1954.

Daryl had moved with his father to Curtis to the Chevrolet garage and later drove a bus for Yellow Diamond Lines out of Hastings.
Daryl was married to Eloise ?Pickle? Snyder in Curtis on March 17, 1957. They returned to Grant, where Daryl ran the Grant Bowling Alley with his father and helped raise his younger brother. He later worked full time for the Farm Service Agency office and sold federal crop insurance. Daryl was a great sports fan and attended nearly every game of the Perkins County Plainsmen. The family was also avid Cornhusker football fans and attended several games a year in Lincoln.

Daryl is survived by his wife, Pickle; three daughters, Lois (Rick) Jacobs, of Lincoln, Deanna (Allen) Aurich, of Sidney, and Jennifer Snyder, of Lincoln; one son, Steve (Michelle) Snyder, of Grant; six grandchildren; one sister, Sharalyn Harr, of Littleton, Colorado; and one brother, Gary (Gail) Snyder, of Liberty, Missouri.
Services will be at 10 a.m. (MT) on Thursday, Feb. 5, at the Grant United Methodist Church with Pastor Nora Mendyk officiating. Friends are encouraged to wear red to the service. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. (CT) at Fort McPherson National Cemetery. Bullock-Long Funeral Home, Grant, is in charge of arrangements.
