    Taken just prior to being sent to France to fight in what we call the Battle of the Bulge. He received a Presidential Unit Citation, was wounded and also received a Purple Heart. He would never talk about his time in the service.

    • Clarence "Curly" Madsen


      Clarence "Curly" Madsen, 93, of Ludington, passed away on Dec. 26 at Sutter Living Center. He was born January 25, 1919 son of George and Marie (Gygax) Madsen.

      Curly attended Ludington High School and was in the Army Infantry in WWII. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation and the Purple Heart. Clarence married Bertha Christensen in 1939 at Emanuel Lutheran Church, worked for the City of Ludington Water Works Department for 25 years retiring in 1981 and was a member of the Danish Brotherhood.

      He is survived by his son, Raymond Madsen; and his grandchildren, Charles Klotz, Thomas Klotz, Dawn McHale, Jennifer Crzegorzyz, Shelley Klotz and their families.

      Clarence is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Bertha; and daughter, Harriet Klotz.

      Burial will take place at Lakeview Cemetery in Ludington. Memorial contributions may be directed to The Sutter Living Center, 1001 Diana Street, Ludington, MI 49431.

      The family has entrusted Oak Grove Funeral Home & Cremation Center with arrangements.
